On 24 May 2001, the Fort George G. Meade Museum hosted a Memorial Day service with guest speaker, Francis Gary Powers, Jr (left).  Mr. Powers' father, Francis Gary Powers, was shot down in his U2 spy plane and captured by the Soviet Union on 1 May 1960.  The 'U2 Spy Plane Incident', as it came to be known, increased tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union who were already suspicious and distrustful of each other. The service began with the playing of bagpipes by Forrest M. Taylor, Pipe Major, 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (right) and concluded with the lowering of the flag by the Honor Guard.
